Starling - experimental music

Starling

Starling is my experimental music project. In this work, much like a starling mimics sounds from the environment in it's song, I take audio or visual stimulus directly from the environment as a foundation for each piece of music, building the rest of the composition around that initial foundation. The aim is to bring 'real life' into the music while celebrating that, if we are mindful to listen, there is music to be heard in the 'every day'.

Paper Bird is a piece of experimental music generated from the flight pattern of starlings at a garden feeder. After taking a series of photographs of the starlings I transposed them onto a grid for 'music box' paper. The tune that came out of the music box was defined entirely by the pattern of the birds' movements, the rest of the music was built up around the music box tune.

Soccer Score is an experimental music piece based entirely on the rhythm created by two kids bouncing a ball up against a wall. The rhythm of the ball game is unaltered and looped, the rest of the music was created around it.
